A US Postal Service worker in Tennessee has been put on non-duty status after a viral video showed him appearing to throw boxes of mail into a dumpster. According to the New York Post, the video in question was posted on TikTok by an individual with the username @Mrs_Denton19.
The postal service worker was wearing his official uniform, and the woman who recorded him disposing of the boxes of mail from his van was heard questioning his actions. The video, which was posted over the weekend, has garnered over 50,000 views.
“I can’t make this up,” the woman said as she was recording him. “He is dumping mail — federal mail — in the dumpster. And looking around while he’s doing it! This gotta be a crime of some sort.”
Before the video ended, the USPS worker had seemingly thrown about five boxes into the dumpster. He was also seen looking around to check if anyone was monitoring. Other users who watched the viral video shared their thoughts about the USPS worker’s actions.
“You should also notify the business who owns that dumpster before the truck comes to pick it up. I bet he came from another route to dump it,” one user said. “This is why you need to get USPS informed mail and let you know every piece of mail that’s supposed to be in your mailbox for that day,” another user also commented.
“You should have called the Postal police. There is such a thing or you should have called the local authorities. I’m just saying,” another user added, per the New York Post.
Responding to the matter, the USPS Office of Inspector General-Mid Atlantic Area Field Office (MAAFO) informed WSMV4 that an investigation into the incident has since been launched and the the worker in question has been placed on “non-duty status.”
“The local OIG office is aware of the video posted on social media this weekend and is conducting an investigation into this matter,” MAAFO added.
