The sister islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1503. One of the first outstanding things Columbus noticed on the islands when he and his crew sailed past it were large number of sea turtles.
Due to this he named the island Las Tortugas which is Spanish for turtles. It was in the mid-16th century that they came to be known as the “Caymanas” a Spanish word for crocodiles.
