Rapper Michael Render, better known as Killer Mike, has responded to criticism from Travis Scott fans after his Grammy win for Best Rap Album, beating out Scott’s Utopia.

In an interview with Complex Music, Mike expressed his respect for Travis Scott and his fanbase but emphasized the years of effort he has poured into his music, asserting that his work offers greater depth than Scott’s.

“Travis Scott is an artist I deeply admire. He’s amazing, but I’m never going to think anyone deserves something over me, especially when I’ve put in my best,” Mike said. “A lot of his fans don’t like me now, and that’s fine. But there’s going to come a time in their life when someone they care for deeply dies, and the question is, what song are you going to turn to?”

Mike highlighted his ability to connect with distinct audiences, particularly young men navigating life’s complexities, which he believes sets him apart from others in the industry.

“I have a song called ‘Motherless’ that acknowledges that struggle. A lot of those fans are young men trying to find their way. I listen to Travis, I jam, but does the record hit you hard when you’re shedding tears? When she won’t let you see your child? When you’re facing jail and child support? That’s what my music does. It’s the blues, baby. I’m here to take care of the whole human being.”

Mike added, “No matter how good you do, somebody’s always going to talk sh*t.”

Despite Scott’s ten Grammy nominations and sold-out arenas, he has yet to secure the coveted award. His Utopia album missed out on the Rap Album of the Year in 2023, just as Astroworld did in 2019.

Meanwhile, Killer Mike, despite clinching a Grammy, has faced a tough year with legal issues and media scrutiny. Nonetheless, he remains committed to delivering high-quality music for his fans and is determined to make a strong comeback.
