A small plane belonging to an air ambulance service provider crashed in Kenya’s capitol, Nairobi, killing at least six people, according to AP.
Charity AMREF Flying Doctors said the aircraft, a Cessna Citation XLS, took off from Wilson airport on Thursday afternoon and was heading to Hargeisa in Somalia when it crashed and burst into flames at a residential building in Nairobi’s Githurai area.
Six people including doctors, nurses and the pilot as well as another two people on the ground, were killed, Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula said. Two others were seriously injured.
Officials said the plane lost radio and radar contact with air traffic control just three minutes after take off, BBC reported.
“At this time, we are cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation,” AMREF CEO Stephen Gitau said in a statement.
The Kenya Defence Forces and the National Police Service have been deployed to the area as investigations continue.
The crash comes just a day after two Ghanaian government ministers and six other people were killed in a helicopter crash in the Ashanti region.
Defense Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed were killed alongside Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former Parliamentary Candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah were the crew members.
The officials were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter on its way to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region when it went off radar Wednesday morning.
