The Medicine Woman, a Jersey City dispensary co-owned by rapper and actor Ice-T (real name is Tracy Lauren Marrow), has ceased operations less than a year after opening.

An employee of the establishment confirmed the closure of the Jersey City location but offered no details regarding the exact date or the reason for the shutdown, according to North Jersey.

Burrett, who also stated her involvement with the cannabis reform group Last Prisoner Project, had expressed significant optimism for the Jersey City dispensary upon its opening.

“Our mission at The Medicine Woman is to provide a full-spectrum of global plant medicines to benefit the health and wellness of our local communities,” their website reads. “We have now expanded to offer more than 1,000 products, have launched our own multi-collection private label product line, and are currently in the development phase of launching our 2nd brick and mortar location.”

Co-owner and founder Charis Burrett, alongside Ice-T, attended the grand opening of the marijuana dispensary on Tonnelle Avenue, which officially took place on April 19, 2025.

At the time of its opening, Ice-T said in a statement, “I’ve dedicated my life and career to giving back and paving the way for minorities. As a New Jersey native, I’m excited for the opportunity legalization offers our community, and I look forward to ushering in a new era for Cannabis in the state. I’ve partnered with my friend of over 25 years, Charis B, who is an authority in cannabis and founder of The Medicine Woman, to ensure a premium experience for our customers and community.”

Nevertheless, this closure hasn’t affected the Medicine Woman’s flagship location in Bellflower, California, which remains operational, according to the company’s website. This California store has been in business since 2019.

Since Governor Phil Murphy signed bills legalizing marijuana on February 22, 2021, the industry has flourished in New Jersey. North Jersey now boasts several dispensaries, including Hashery in Hackensack, Ascend in Rochelle Park and Fort Lee, and Sweetspot Dispensary in River Edge.

The marijuana industry is proving to be highly competitive, contributing to the closure of some businesses. For instance, reports indicate that Hashstoria in Newark, which was co-owned by Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan, has also shut down.

Still, amidst the chaos of The Medicine Woman’s closure, Ice-T now has more time to dedicate to other business pursuits.

This comes as he recently indicated he would be appearing less frequently in the current season of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” Despite the reduced appearances, his role on the show, which he has held for more than two decades, is secure.

The decision to reduce the actor’s time on the show was purely a business one, as he explained to TMZ. The show executives intended to reintroduce the character of Amanda Rollins, played by Kelli Giddish, who was returning to the season after being written off three years prior, following over a decade on the show.

The change eventually came down to the budget; to keep Giddish as a regular cast member for the season, Ice-T’s role was shifted to part-time. He mentioned that the additional time was welcome, as it allowed him to explore other prospects outside of the show. Now, he will have more time available to focus on his next business endeavor.
