Two other countries in the Horn of Africa to end rivalry after 15 years

Another regional rivalry in Africa is set to come to an end as Somalia president is expected in Eritrea for a 3-day state visit.

The invitation of President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed by president Isaias Afwerki will bring to an end 15 years of zero diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The relations between the two countries severed after Eritrea was accused of allegedly supporting al Shabaab extremist group, responsible for attacks within Mogadishu and for controlling parts of rural Somalia. Although Eritrea denied these allegations, Somalia has been treating it with suspicion.

Eritrea has also been under UN sanctions due to these allegations.

This would be the first-ever visit by a serving Somali president to Eritrea, according to Garowe Online.  The meeting aims to restore diplomatic relations.

It comes in the wake of a historic meeting between Eritrea and Ethiopia, which had been at war for close to 20 years.

Another historic meeting was held between Sudan and Egypt to mend relations.
