Two months ago, Kersheta Ross and her son, Kash, awoke to gunfire outside their apartment. Her son, who was shot in the head while sleeping, has finally been released from the hospital.
“It has been a process…a long process,” Ross told WALA.
According to deputies, the Prichard toddler was in bed close to his mother when a gunshot pierced the walls of their St. Stephens Woods apartment.

His mother recounted, “Around one o’clock in the morning, that’s when I heard gunshots and that’s what woke me up. But what scared me the most was Kash’s cry and his screaming.”
The day after the incident, deputies and canines arrived to check the site.
According to Ross, the bullet passed through Kash’s head but narrowly missed his brain. He was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and two months of treatment.
Paul Burch, the sheriff for Mobile County, said after the shooting that he suspects it was gang-related.
However, the MCSO confirmed that no one had been caught. Deputies are still searching for the shooter.
As the investigation proceeds, Ross said that the most important matter to her is Kash’s safety.
She said that when Kash was discharged from the hospital, she wasn’t the only one who felt emotional.
“Some of the nurses were crying,” said Ross. “Kash had made so many friends at the hospital during the time he spent there.”
And concerning the unidentified culprit, Ross said, “If they get caught, you know, they get caught. You can’t hide forever. They’re just going to have to deal with God.”
However, as Kash still needs one more surgery, the family has established a fund to assist with medical costs.
Ross previously told Al.com that she was terrified to return home and was seeking donations to help with lodging fees, food, and clothing because she will be out of work for a long period.
“I no longer want to live where we are living now,” Ross told the outlet. “It’s not safe for me or my kids at all…Anything will help us right now. We thank you and be blessed.”
