The Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET)

UWONET is a Ugandan non-governmental organization (NGO) and an umbrella group of national women’s NGOs and individuals operating in East Africa. The body was created after the 1993 East African Women’s Conference, held in Kampala, Uganda, in preparation for the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995.

The group is working to advance public policy regarding women’s rights.  According to UWONET, it coordinates “collective action” among its members to attain gender equality in Uganda. The group has made great strides, improving women’s economic output and helping women win land rights in the 1998 Land Act.
