Cobalt
The DRC is the world’s leading producer of cobalt but that is yet to reflect on the country’s economy and the lives of its people as its mining laws have always favoured foreign investors.
The high demand for batteries, smartphones, and electric cars has increased the price of cobalt to $75,000 a tonne, an increase of 127% in one year.
The DRC is, therefore, reviewing its 15-year mining code to ensure that there is a fair share of the resource between the country and foreign investors.
