Terrapin on a female hippo, along with cute baby hippo…Africa Geographic

The amphibious goddess

The female hippopotamus has been revered in several African societies.

In Egypt, the female hippopotamus is called Tawaret and she is the goddess of birth and fertility.

In Mozambique, the Ronga people say that a woman left her baby with a hippo for protection.

Every night the hippo would visit the mother so she could nurse her baby.
