In many African communities, Queen Mothers held a special place in the kingdoms and beyond. They were not only revered and respected; many of them were seen as a voice of reason or a deciding factor in cases that involved the royalty and the locals.
In some cases, they are seen as the link to the kings and Crown Prince and would be approached by the common folks for intercessions in issues they want addressed. In other cases, Queen mothers decide who the next king would be.
The responsibility and respect that came with this position made it enviable. Many wives of the kings would fight tooth and nail to not only have their children become kings but also for them to be regents if and when the next-in-line is too young to rule.
Whichever the case, many Queen Mothers are still celebrated, and here are some popular ones you should know.
