Another teacher recorded using N-word in classroom resigns

The Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) on Monday announced that a middle school teacher who was recorded using the N-word in the presence of students has resigned. According to ABC10, the Kit Carson International Academy teacher’s resignation comes after the SCUSD launched an investigation into the teacher’s use of racist language in the classroom.

The teacher in question was recorded using the racial slur in a 7th-grade classroom in June last year. And in the aftermath of the incident, the teacher was quickly taken out of the classroom and placed on unpaid suspension.

Responding to the initial incident, the SCUSD spokesperson told the news outlet that the district “condemns racism in any form, which harms our students, families and community.” The district also added that it initiated the teacher’s termination process in December 2021. The teacher, however, opted to resign on April 30. That was before the termination process could start.

“By taking swift and aggressive action in this case Sac City Unified sent a clear message that racist language by district employees will be addressed,” SCUSD Board of Education President Christina Pritchett said.

To prevent such incidents from occurring, the district said it has implemented mandatory anti-racism training for its entire staff.

“To prevent incidents involving racism and to make our schools more supportive and welcoming to all, the district has implemented mandatory anti-racism training for all staff,” SCUSD Superintendent Jorge A. Aguilar said.

“But the work cannot end there. We must continue to confront and interrupt racism so our schools can stay focused on creating equitable learning opportunities for all students.”
