Beautiful Somali models make Vogue Arabia’s first hijabi cover

Just a few weeks after Vogue featured an African on it’s cover, and Teen Vogue covered Marsai Martin and Nico Parker, the world’s top fashion magazine seems to have outdone itself this time as Vogue Arabia outdoors it’s April 2019 cover which features beautiful black models Halima Aden, Amina Adan and Ikram Abdi Omar which will be its first ever Hijab Vogue cover.

The cover reveal was made on Vogue Arabia’s Instagram page on March 27. The April issue is dedicated to female empowerment and features not only the models but brave women such as US congresswoman Ilhan Omar, athletes Ibtihaj Muhammad and Zahra Lari, and CEO Ghizlan Guenez making a difference all over the world.

Excited about being a part of history, the models took to their social media to share the cover with their die-hard fans who had nothing but great words to say to them.

The three Somali models are seen in black hijabs and subtle makeup that bring out their true beauty in their white lace dresses.

Ever since its establishment in 2017, this issue will be the first time the magazine features three African women all proudly wearing their hijabs.

For the models who have not been shy to wear hijabs even on runways, this comes as a big step forward for diversity in the fashion and modeling industry.

All the models have page spreads in the magazine and discuss their rise in the industry and share their thoughts on hijabs.

Halima Aden shares her thoughts in her interview stating that “It’s important to remember that wearing a hijab is a woman’s personal choice, and I never claimed to be the perfect Muslim girl.” 

Ikram Abdi Omar also explains that “I haven’t experienced any challenges wearing the hijab as a model, apart from the occasional question asking if I was forced to wear it – which I wasn’t.”

Amina Adan confidently said that “I think most hijabis have met the same misconceptions: ‘Do you shower in it?’ ‘Were you forced by your parents?’” 

The magazine cover release comes as a great way to round up the 2019 celebration of women’s month but knowing Vogue, this could just be a teaser to something more.
