Former NFL linebacker Micheal Barrow was taken into custody on Tuesday after he accidentally punched his wife during an altercation with his son.
Per TMZ Sports, the altercation happened outside Florida’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Monday. An initial report stated that Barrow, who was selected in the second round of the 1993 NFL draft, and other family members got into an altercation while they were headed to the airport. The altercation is said to have exacerbated when they arrived at their terminal.
In the incident report, officers stated that Barrow threatened to punch an individual after he was provoked by that person. That was when Barrow’s wife, Shelley, came in to try and de-escalate the situation.
A subsequent update stated that the individuals involved in the altercation were Barrow and one of his sons. Barrow is said to have accidentally struck Shelley “in the face, which caused her to fall on the ground” when she tried to break up the dispute.
Documents also stated that after Barrow’s elder son saw “his mom on the ground” and Barrow “punching his younger brother,” he quickly entered the fray and got into a struggle with his father. Barrow was ultimately arrested in connection with the incident.
Barrow was ultimately charged with battery, and he pleaded not guilty on Wednesday. During his NFL career, Barrow played for the Houston Oilers, Carolina Panthers, New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. He is also a two-time national championship winner with the University of Miami, TMZ Sports reported.
Following his retirement, Barrow landed a coaching role on the Hurricanes team before joining the Seattle Seahawks for a similar position.
