‘He even picked her groceries up’: UPS driver praised after saving elderly woman who passed out

by Dollita Okine, 3:48pm August 22, 2024,

Raheem Cooper has been hailed as a hero, which has surprised him. On August 12, Cooper, a UPS carrier, was on his route when he noticed a woman passed out in her driveway. He immediately rushed out of his truck to see if anyone was at her house before he dialed 911 and started delivering assistance to the woman.

He also went ahead and waited with another passerby until the ambulance came. Cooper told WALB, “About 5-6 minutes later, the ambulance came and at that point, I helped her get on the stretcher and the other young lady had to leave to go get her kids, but it was by the grace of God we were there to help her.”

He explained that before heading out on his original route, he gave the family his name and phone number. But word of his deeds spread like wildfire. The following day, a Facebook post congratulating him for his brave actions received thousands of shares.

His mother, who was shopping for a piece of furniture for him at Badcock Valdosta, overheard the employees talking about the post which read, “Everyone help me give a BIG SHOUT OUT to Raheem Cooper from UPS!! He was working his route in Valdosta yesterday and drove past a VERY elderly lady who fell in her driveway and was having a medical emergency. She was bad off. Mind you, it was 102 degrees outside and she had been laying out there for god knows how long!”

It continued, “Her groceries were spilled everywhere and they were not cold anymore if that says anything. Mr. Cooper stopped what he was doing and immediately rendered aid and called an ambulance. She surely would have not made it if he didn’t help her. He even picked her groceries up afterwards. We need more people like Raheem in this world!! Thank you sir!! Stand up gentleman!!”

Cooper’s mother told the employees at Badcock Valdosta that it was her son they were talking about. “She told them it was her son, which is me, so they told me if I just come up there they would just give it to me free. So I’m truly blessed and I just thank them for blessing me,” Cooper recalled.

Angel Burkett, the operations officer at Badcock, noticed the numerous comments on Facebook and decided to gift him the item he needed to finish his bedroom set. Burkett said that Cooper has been a longtime customer of their store.

Meanwhile, Cooper mentioned that he has contacted the family of the lady he assisted, and she is recovering.

According to him, this proves that doing good deeds brings good fortune.

Still, he said of his new-found fame, “It feels so great. It’s amazing. I wasn’t even expecting to tell the story. The only person I told was my mom, so I’m really surprised by all the attention that it’s getting. I’m satisfied with what I do, but I have to give all glory to God because if it wasn’t for Him, I wouldn’t have been there, so I just thank God. What if that was my family member, my kids, or including my me with how hot the sun is? I just feel like if you see somebody that needs help, just do the best you can by God’s grace.”
