American singer Lizzo has earned her first lead role as she plays Sister Rosetta Tharpe, an American gospel singer known as the “Godmother of rock and roll,” in Amazon MGM Studios’ Rosetta.
The 36-year-old star took to Instagram to express her excitement with a photo of Deadline’s coverage which had the caption: “Black people made rock n roll yeaaaah.”
“It’s finally out y’all. I’m so excited and honored”, Lizzo added on her Instagram story.
Rosetta will be written by Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant, Queen of the South) and Kwynn Perry of the ‘Tigerbelles, The Burned Photo.’
Lizzo’s not the only big name involved in the project’s production. According to a PEOPLE report, the likes of Kevin Beisler, Significant Productions’ Nina Yang Bongiovi and Forest Whitaker all play a part in the upcoming show.
Tharpe was a gospel singer whose rise to fame began in the 1930s by mixing spiritual lyrics with electric guitar, and is now nicknamed the “Godmother of rock and roll.”
The project will be Lizzo’s first feature film role since 2019’s Hustlers, which she starred in with the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu.
Lizzo, originally known as Melissa Jefferson, played the role of a stripper named Liz in the Lorene Scafaria-directed crime comedy about a crew of New York City strippers who steal money by drugging stock traders and CEOs who visit their club.
Also, the Grammy winner recently made a guest television appearance in The Mandalorian as The Duchess.

Recently, Lizzo opened up on her mental health and recent weight loss amid the release of her new single and music video for “Still Bad” ahead of her new album Love in Real Life.
During a concert at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles on March 12, Lizzo talked about her struggles with depression in 2023.
That year, she was sued by former backup dancers over allegations of harassment and a toxic workplace, which she has denied.
In social media videos, Lizzo shared how her mental health journey inspired her upcoming album’s title. She recalled feeling deeply depressed and afraid of being seen, yet had a breakthrough moment at a concert when a stranger told her, “Lizzo, I love you,” and embraced her.
