Located in Lamu County, Siyu Fort is the only Kenyan fort that was not constructed by foreigners. It was constructed in the 13th century by Sheikh Bwana Mataka for purposes of safeguarding Siyu residents from Omani Arab domination. Sheikh Mataka also rebuilt much of the Siyu town, including his fine stone mansion, whose remains are still visible.
