Vasco da Gama Pillar
Constructed in 1498 in Malindi, Kilifi County, Vasco da Gama Pillar is one of the oldest European monuments in Africa. It is named after Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese explorer. Standing impressively on a cliff, the pillar is a remake of the first pillar, which was destroyed by Muslims for having a cross. Muslims saw it as encouraging Christianity in the region, which was predominantly occupied by Muslims.
