He carries the same name as another famous African soldier

Colonel Pape Malick Diaw is a Senegalese soldier who was once the deputy chief of staff of the Senegalese Army. Interestingly, the coup leader in Mali is named exactly as Colonel Diaw although the two men are vastly different in age.

If there are any other similarities, it would be that both men commanded the respect of their peers at an early age with the Malian Diaw rising to head the key Kati base near Bamako. In 2006 too, the Senegalese Diaw oversaw military efforts to rein in Senegalese involved in the illegal trans-Mediterranean voyage into Europe.
