Authorities in Miami-Dade have charged a 23-year-old man with murder after he allegedly shot and killed an individual he got into a live-chat dispute with as they were playing the NBA 2K25 PlayStation game.
According to NBC 6 South Florida, the fatal August 14 incident occurred at an address in northwest Miami-Dade. The suspect, identified as Derrick Terrell Ates III, is facing a charge of second-degree murder.
Authorities said that Ates and the victim were playing NBA 2K25 when they got into a live-chat dispute. Ates is said to have then made his address available to the victim.
Ates and the victim subsequently met, and the suspect was slapped by the victim before Ates drew a gun and repeatedly shot the victim. The unidentified victim was later pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.
Ates ultimately turned himself in to deputies after he initially ran to his residence in the wake of the shooting. He also admitted to the murder.
