Nigeria
This is the third most dangerous African country for a woman and the ninth in the world. The survey says the country’s military was accused by human rights groups of torturing, raping and killing civilians during a nine-year fight against the militant group, Boko Haram.
Gender violence is currently a major problem in the country, particularly in Northeast Nigeria. In the past years, there have been several reported cases of domestic violence, early marriage, sexual exploitation, rape, among others.
The survey further named the West African country as the fourth most dangerous for women in terms of human trafficking. It also came in 6th as the country where women risk their lives due to cultural traditional practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage.
As at 2017, about 20 million Nigerian women were found to be victims of genital mutilation.
