The Yorubas are one of the major ethnic groups in Nigeria. The Yorubas take the opportunity of their wedding ceremonies to celebrate and promote their rich culture, and as with many ethnic groups in Africa, the groom is required to pay a bride price to the bride’s family. In modern times, the groom makes an elaborate presentation of gifts, ranging from jewelry to food, to the bride’s family, while the bride also makes a show of modesty by politely refusing most of the gifts and instead picking a single item of good virtue, such as the Bible or the Koran.

The groom in-turn often gets into the good books of his future in-laws simply by genuflecting endlessly and showing how meek and obedient he can be.
