According to the Mayor, “More than 2,000 children have been programmed to benefit from this scheme. I have other children I have been sponsoring even before I became mayor.”
The pupils and students were elated to receive the school kits that will enable them to have a smooth academic year, something which they have never experienced before.
Ketoum Blessing, an orphan student in form four, said, “My parents died when I was in class 6. It has never been possible for me to afford a text book and even talk less of a school uniform.”
Another student, Buma Sheller Chia, added, “My parents died in 2013. I am in form 6, and I always find it difficult to pay my school fees and sometimes I even have to clear people’s farms to pay my fees because I want to become somebody tomorrow.”
In Cameroon, the government creates schools but does not provide the necessary funds for construction of buildings and dietetics materials to facilitate the learning process. It is in this light that Mayor Awodang has promised to provide computers, benches, and construct buildings to accommodate more students.
The scholarship scheme is taking the Mayor to 17 colleges and 76 primary schools found in the Fundong Municipality.
