by Sandra Appiah, 1:00am November 08, 2011,

Boxing legend and Hall of Famer, Smokin’ Joe Frazier has lost his battle with liver cancer. His family announced his passing on Monday night.

Frazier began his professional boxing career in 1965, eventually becoming the New York State Athletic Commission's world heavyweight champion. He fought and defeated other boxing greats, including George Chuvalo and Buster Mathis. His most notable opponent was Mohammed Ali, with whom he had an intense, epic rivalry. In his first fight with Ali, Frazier was the victor. However, he would later be defeated by Ali in the famed "Thrilla in Manila."

Frazier was a terrific fighter. In fact, his personality and fighting style were inspiration for the Oscar-winning film Rocky. He was a fighter both in and out of the ring and will truly be missed.
