The long-awaited trailer for Aretha Franklin’s biopic, Respect, is finally out, and all we can say is…wow!
The film, which stars none other than Grammy and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson playing the iconic Queen of Soul, follows Franklin’s life from humble beginnings to stardom and becoming one of the most celebrated, decorated and trailblazing musicians in history.
Franklin, who passed away in 2018 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, played an active role in the film’s production until her death, reportedly handpicking Hudson to portray her.
Originally planned to be released in August, the date was pushed to December 25 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The movie also stars Forest Whitaker, Mary J. Blige, Marlon Wayans, Queen Latifah, among others.
Another National Geographic mini-series, Genius: Aretha, which stars Cynthia Erivo as the Queen of Soul, is also set to be released later in the year.
As we impatiently wait for Respect to hit the cinemas, let’s take a sneak peek of the trailer that was first premiered at the BET Awards over the weekend. Enjoy!
