Rafiki
Kenya made history for featuring the first-ever film at the Cannes Festival. Rafiki (Swahili for a friend) is a coming of age story about two daughters of rival politicians who fell in love in a world where LGBTQ relationships are frowned upon.
The filmmaker, Wanuri Kahiu and actors Samantha Muatsia and Sheila Munyiva received a standing ovation at Cannes.
“Shamefully banned in its home country,Kenya, Wanuri Kahiu’s tender tale of first lesbian love is modest, flawed and valuable.” #Rafiki.

Sadly, Kenyans would not be able to watch the film as it has been banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board for containing gay material.
