A North Carolina mother of three was fatally shot by “the man she once” loved in a suspected case of murder-suicide, the deceased victim’s family said, per PEOPLE. Two of the victim’s three daughters were said to be present when the fatal incident occurred.
In a news release, authorities said that 27-year-old ShaKeva Dixon’s body was found in her apartment by Durham Police Department officers on February 3. Officers also said that the body of the suspected shooter, identified as Maurice Langston, 36, was found close to the crime scene.
Dixon and Langston shared two children. Police said that Dixon and Langston sustained gunshot wounds, adding that Langston seemingly shot himself.
In a GoFundMe set up to raise funds for Dixon’s three daughters, the deceased woman’s family said that she “had made up her mind that she was done with the physical, verbal, mental, and emotional abuse.”
“He said he was leaving, and she didn’t beg, chase, or plead for him to stay this time. She told him to just go ahead,” the fundraiser adds.
“That triggered him because he came back. He came back in full rage. He kicked her front door in, went upstairs, kicked her bedroom door in, and ended her life while 2 of her children were present.
Then he turned around and ended his own life. She leaves behind 3 beautiful daughters who are temporarily in the custody of the family. But they have to go through court and proper channels to gain sole custody. The kids are ages 1, 2, and 9 years old.”
The fundraiser also states that “anything will help care for these children at this time, giving her the beautiful homegoing service she deserves! Anything will help this family in their time of need.”
