Winnie Madikizela-Mandela

Outside South Africa, many people do not even know that Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was not Nelson Mandela’s wife after 1996. She was always the exciting and fierce “Winnie Mandela” until her death in 2018.

She was never a substantive first lady but to be involved in the freedom struggle beside the man who became South Africa’s first black president, Winnie might as well be counted an honorary first lady.

Between 2009 and 2018, she was an MP in the name of the African National Congress.
