The War against Boko Haram – 2009 till date

The Islamist militant group, Boko Haram was founded in 2002. Since its formation, the group has caused terror in the Northern part of Nigeria, claiming thousands of lives.

As its name signifies, “Westernization is Sacrilege” the main objective of the group is to impose Islamic law in the country.

The group has been behind high profile bombings, killing of police officers and military personnel. In 2010, they staged jailbreaks and attacked civilian targets across Nigeria. It has so far killed tens of thousands and displaced 2.3 million from their homes and was at a time the world’s deadliest terror group, according to the Global Terrorism Index.

They targeted schools, churches and kidnapped 300 school girls which drew international condemnation in 2014.
