Born Marvin Pentz Gay Jr. on April 2, 1939, in Washington, D.C., Gaye was the soulful crooner who was instrumental in solidifying the sound of soul in the 1960’s.
Apart from being a singer, Gaye was a talented record producer and songwriter.
Gaye won numerous accolades posthumously as well as when he was alive.
Gaye’s tumultuous relationship with his father coupled with his alcohol and drug use proved fatal on April 1, 1984.
His father, Marvin Gay Sr. shot Gaye after he intervened in an altercation between his father and his mother.
He was 44-years-old.
