Royal Gazette and Sierra Leone Advertiser (1817) – Sierra Leone
The first known black-owned newspaper is the Royal Gazette and Sierra Leone Advertiser which was started in 1817 by Abraham Hazeley, Nova Scotian settler who moved to Liberia and established one of the most influential Creole families in Sierra Leone and West Africa. The paper lasted for 10 years and 457 issues were published. Articles in the newspaper include efforts to suppress the illegal slave trade, detailed accounts of court trials for offences, shipping arrival and entertainment details about canoe and pony races, rowing and wrestling matches at the local fair.
