Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer Tems—Temilade Openiyi—has become the first African female artist to hit one billion streams on Spotify.

Spotify verified that she achieved this milestone with Future’s “WAIT FOR U,” which features Drake and samples her “Higher” off her 2020 EP For Broken Ears.

The song was included on Future’s 2022 album “I NEVER LIKED YOU,” which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Tems’ first all-genre song chart-topper, as well as Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Rhythmic Airplay, according to Billboard.

It also received nominations for best melodic rap performance and best rap song at the 2023 Grammy Awards; Tems won the former, her first Grammy win.

It was recently reported that the 29-year-old, through her company, The Leading Vibe, joined San Diego Football Club’s ownership group as a club partner.

On June 5, at the Troxy in Shoreditch, London, she will be the main act at Billboard Presents THE STAGE at SXSW London.
