In a move sparking outrage among Democrats, Texas Republicans have introduced a redistricting plan that could oust Rep. Jasmine Crockett from her seat and reshape the state’s congressional map to strengthen GOP dominance.

The controversial proposal, unveiled last week by the Texas House GOP, seeks to redraw district boundaries in key Democratic strongholds, particularly Dallas and Houston, adding Republican-leaning areas and potentially flipping five seats in the GOP’s favor. Though still in draft form and subject to revisions, the redistricting marks a significant mid-decade attempt to consolidate Republican power.

Rep. Crockett, a rising progressive voice who currently represents Texas’ 30th District covering much of Dallas, accused Republicans of a calculated attempt to marginalize opposition voices.

“This is a power grab to silence voters,” Crockett said, revealing that Democratic incumbents were asked to confirm their home addresses just before the map’s release, a move she interpreted as strategic targeting.

The shakeup doesn’t stop with Crockett. The proposed lines could pit Democratic Reps. Lloyd Doggett and Greg Casar against each other by merging parts of Austin’s 35th and 37th Districts into one, forcing high-profile primary showdowns.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, speaking in Austin, described the moment as urgent.

“This is an all-hands-on-deck moment,” Jeffries said, according to a Fox News report. “We will fight them politically. We will fight them governmentally. We will fight them in court. We will fight them in terms of winning the hearts and minds of the people of Texas and beyond.”

He criticized institutions for aligning with Trumpism, declaring, “Texas Democrats will not bend the knee.”

Rep. Lizzie Fletcher echoed Jeffries’ alarm, warning that the tactics playing out in Texas could soon appear elsewhere.

“People across the country are watching what we are doing in Texas,” Fletcher said, framing the battle over district lines as part of a wider strategy to cement long-term Republican control.
