M.K.O Abiola
A symbol of democracy in Nigeria, M.K.O Abiola won what many describe as the most successful election in Nigeria. The businessman who was known across the length and breadth of the country wrestled power from the military to death.
After he declared himself winner of the 1993 elections in 1994, he was arrested and detained by President General Sanni Abacha who declared him wanted and accused him of treason.
His arrest sparked uproar across the globe and was condemned by Pope John Paul II, Arch Desmond Tutu and other human rights activists.
He sadly died in 1998 under mysterious circumstances, a day before he was set to be released, following the death of General Sanni Abacha.
