Senegalese-American singer Akon has released his own cryptocurrency debit card for his digital asset platform in partnership with Baanx. The 48-year-old musician, born Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam, disclosed this on his Instagram page.

“It’s Done. The official AKOIN Card!!! Which allows you to now spend your AKOIN (AKN) were ever master card is excepted [sic],” he wrote. “I’m sure you can’t freely spend your crypto in any of your favorite stores right? Well you can with AKOIN (AKN) so grab yours now on BitMart.com before we expand to the major exchanges.”

The AKoin Card came to light when Akon announced in September 2020 that he was going to construct a futuristic pan-African city in his home country of Senegal. He told the Associated Press the project was to commence in 2021 at the cost of $6 billion.

He said the city will use a cryptocurrency called AKoin. In July this year, Akon also announced a second futuristic and cryptocurrency-based city, with the East African nation of Uganda being his country of choice this time around.

The state-of-the-art project is expected to be completed by 2036 and transactions in the city will be done through his “stellar-based” AKoin cryptocurrency. The cost of the project was not disclosed.

The singer is not the only celebrity making strong moves in the crypto industry. Recently, American rapper The Game debuted his non-fungible token (NFT) Collection titled “Genesis.” Also, in February, billionaire rapper Jay-Z teamed up with Twitter CEO to invest in bitcoin. The two billionaires reportedly invested 500 bitcoin into a new endowment called ₿trust.
