With a few days to January 29 which marks exactly one year of the movie release, the Black Panther movie is in the news again to add another first to its ever-growing history-making list.
The Oscar Academy released the nominations for its 91st event on January 22 and Black Panther stamped all over it. With seven nominations, Black Panther makes history as the most nominated movie in almost all the categories.
It also made history as the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture in the 91-year history of the Oscars. It was nominated alongside BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite Green Book, Roma A Star is Born and Vice.
The other nominations for the movie are Best Original Song, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Original Score.
But while the movie is receiving all these accolades, we can’t help but wonder why Ryan Coogler does not make the list for Best Director.
With this many nominations, we are sure to have the stars of the movie grace the red carpet and represent the culture in Wakanda forever style and of course, take home as many awards as possible.
Black Panther isn’t the only representation for the Black community in this year’s Oscars Awards. For her role in ‘If Beale Street Could Talk”, Regina King is nominated for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Mahershala Ali was nominated for Best
Originally a novel written by celebrated black writer James Baldwin,
If Beale Street Could Talk also gets nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score categories respectively.
It seems the Oscars are all about diversity at the 91st event. Late last year, Kevin Hart was announced as the host for the 2019 Oscars awards but what started as a cause for celebration ended abruptly when the comedian stepped down as host following a social media backlash surrounding homophobic remarks he had posted years ago.
The Oscars Academy has still not found a replacement host for this year’s event which is slated to happen on February 24 at the Dolby Theatre, According to People Magazine, this year’s event might go on without a host.
