Leading the African pack is Dr. Denis Mukwege, a renowned gynecologist from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mukwege is the founder of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Southern DRC, where he specializes in the treatment of female rape victims.

The 62-year-old doctor is regarded as the world’s leading expert on how to repair internal physical damages caused by gang rape. Since the start of the second Congo War in 1998, Dr. Mukwege has treated thousands of women and girls who are victims of gang rape.

He has also won numerous awards, including the European Union’s Sakharov Prize in 2014 and an honorary Doctor of Laws by Harvard University in 2015. In 2013, Mukwege received his first of three nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.
