Tensions between South Africa and Nigeria over xenophobia

This is the only dispute on our list that is not between neighbouring countries. But nonetheless, it involves two of Africa’s biggest economies.

Xenophobic attacks against Africans in South Africa has been a decade long phenomenon. But the violence that is carried out seems to target, disproportionately, Nigerians.

When the attacks re-emerged in 2019, Nigeria pulled out of a continental summit while its citizens threatened to shut down South African businesses in Nigeria.
