Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda Baci has officially set a new Guinness World Record for the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice, with a total weight of 8,780 kilogrammes (19,356 lb 9 oz).
She achieved this in partnership with food brand Gino at Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. Confirming this on Monday, Guinness World Records (GWR) posted on its official X handle: “New record: Largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice – 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) achieved by Hilda Baci and Gino in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria ????????.”
Baci made headlines in May 2023 when she claimed the record for longest cooking marathon (individual) with a time of 93 hr 11 minutes.
That achievement inspired many in Africa to take on their own marathon attempts.
The longest cooking marathon has since been broken twice, and on Friday, Baci decided to set a new record by cooking the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice.
Rules of the record state that certain ingredients had to be used. Guinness World Records said Baci shared the exact measurements of everything she used in preparing her record-breaking dish.
“Her ingredients, cooked up in a gigantic pot, included 4,000 kg of washed basmati rice (the rice had to constitute at least 80% of the total weight), 164 kg of fresh goat meat, 220 kg of Gino Asun & peppered chicken cubes, and 600 kg of her own jollof pepper mix,” Guinness wrote.
Baci and her team also went according to strict rules when it came to the distribution of the food, as they made sure that none of it was wasted.
It took “nine hours of fire, passion and teamwork” and 1,200 kg of gas to create the 16,600 plates of rice “served with joy, love and community,” Baci told Guinness World Records.
A massive crowd of thousands gathered to watch Baci make her jollof rice.
The 28-year-old said of her attempt: “I didn’t realize it would be this hard and it has been a challenge. It’s a lot of hard work but really satisfying to achieve the record.
“This achievement also belongs to the people of Nigeria as they all contributed to the achievement.”
