Jaylen Lockhart has received praise for his courage and strategic thinking. While on duty in Aurora last Saturday, the postal worker from the Chicago region observed a matter of concern.
He abruptly leaped from his truck and called 911 to assist Guy Miller, who had fallen and struck his head while walking his dog, Bentley.
Lockhart told NBC Chicago, “I was looking in my rear view mirror at him, and he took a tumble.”
Lockhart requested help from some neighbors and convinced Miller to tell him his home location.
Miller recounted, “I’m trying to get up at the same time and, and… he tell me just to stay down, just stay down, you might be hurt, and it can’t be walking anywhere.”
Lockhart later found Marcia, Miller’s wife, and then went back to finish his route.
Marcia subsequently extended an invitation to Lockhart and his family, asking him to join their family to celebrate Thanksgiving.
According to him, the act was nothing unusual. He stated, “I was raised that way. I was raised that way, my parents, my family. Just, you look out for others. You know in the state that the world is in today, just kindness and grace is all that anyone ever needs.”
Lockhart was given the honor of lighting the official Christmas tree in Aurora, abc7Chicago reported over the weekend.
Marcia, who believes Lockhart went above and beyond, said, “Just really good to see kindness, compassion, and care in the world…when you see so much on the news and so many labels put on this generation of being into themselves and not caring.”
Lockhart has also since been honored with the Mayor’s Award of Service by Mayor Richard Irvin.
