Toraya Reid, the sister of Minnesota Timberwolves star Naz Reid, was gunned down by her boyfriend in New Jersey.
Per Sports Illustrated, the fatal Saturday incident occurred at the Paragon Apartment complex in Jackson Township. Toraya’s boyfriend, identified as Shaquille Green, 29, was arrested and charged in connection with her murder. Green also faces several weapons offenses.
Authorities said that when officers responded to the scene after receiving a report, they found Toraya with several gunshot wounds and “laying near the exit of the apartment complex.”
Green was ultimately arrested after he was seen “running on North New Prospect Road.” “A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, identified Green – who has been in a dating relationship with Ms. Reid – as the individual responsible for her death,” the prosecutor’s office said.
Naz, 26, has previously spoken about his two sisters, telling MSP Magazine in a 2023 interview that Toraya was “super protective, she treats us like she’s our parent.”
In the wake of her killing, Naz and Toraya’s sister, Jakahya, took to Facebook to describe Green as a “coward.” She also stated that she hoped the people close to Green don’t get to “experience this type of pain.”
“My sister has a name,” Jakahya stated in a different post, per Sports Illustrated. “She is not just some girl, She’s not just the [NBA superstar] sister. She has a name and that is Toraya Reid. Respect her (expletive) or don’t mention her at all.”
The 2025-26 NBA season is set to tip off on October 21, and Naz is scheduled to join the Timberwolves for training camp on September 29. Naz joined the Timberwolves as an undrafted free agent in 2019, and he has since become a key player as he provides sixth-man duties for the team.
He also agreed to a five-year, $125 million contract extension with the basketball franchise a few months ago.
