The Trans-Atlantic or Atlantic slave trade occurred during the 16th through the 19th centuries. The tragic event caused the displacement of approximately 12 million Africans.

The psychological, emotional, economic and social effects of slavery still ripples through African and American societies affecting families on the continent and in the diaspora.

Though Africans from all over the continent were involved in the trade, specific regions had a major portion of their civilization taken away and bound to ships. Most never returned.
