The Akan

The Akan peoples reside in Ghana, Burkina Faso, Togo/Benin, and portions of Liberia.

The Akan tribe members are comprised of Twi and Fante speakers.

The level of Akan’s taken during slavery was due to the Ashanti and Fanti conflicts which produced large numbers of captives sold into slavery.  They were referred to as the Coromantee.
