A two-year-old boy, Kaimir Jones, was fatally attacked by two large dogs at an unlicensed daycare in Valdosta, Georgia, on October 4. Valdosta Police, Firefighters, and Emergency Medical Services responded to a report of a dog attack at a residence in the 3800 block of Pecan Drive at approximately 3:45 p.m.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered the child was already deceased, according to WALB. A police news release said that Valdosta Police Department Detectives and Crime Scene personnel determined that 48-year-old Stacy Wheeler Cobb was operating an unlicensed daycare from her home. The investigation revealed that Jones’ mother had entrusted him to Cobb’s care for the day.
Police believe Cobb left Jones unsupervised for at least two hours. She allegedly told officers she had taken a nap and “thought the child was well.”
Authorities suspect that during this time, Jones accessed the backyard and opened a kennel, leading to him being fatally attacked by “two large Rottweiler dogs.”
“This is a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred, but because of negligence on this offender’s behalf, a mother has tragically lost a child,” said Chief Leslie Manahan, per the Valdosta Police Department’s news release, according to WALB. “I want to express our department’s deepest sympathy to the family.
“No words will ever ease their pain, but our hearts go out to them during this unimaginably difficult time,” Manahan continued. “I also keep our first responders in my prayers, as they continue processing their response to this tragic scene.”
At the time of the incident, Jones was the only child at Cobb’s residence, although police indicate that the home typically hosts around 10 children daily.
Cobb has since been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children, with additional charges anticipated as the investigation progresses. Following the event, Lowndes County Animal Control Officers seized the two Rottweilers involved, as well as a third dog from Cobb’s home.
A GoFundMe established by the toddler’s mother, Adrianna Jones, has raised over $27,000 for his memorial.
Her “intuition” prompted her to leave work early on Saturday, as she described in the fundraiser’s description. However, by the time she arrived at Cobb’s residence, police officers were already on the scene.
“This was a heartbreaking, devastating, and traumatizing scene that I wouldn’t wish on anyone,” the grieving mother wrote.
“I did not have any life insurance for my 2-year-old son, so I am asking the community for help with raising funds for his memorial funeral,” she concluded. “Anything will help and anything is appreciated. Thank you.”
