For a man whose last name came from his infamous love for women, Idi Amin Dada’s decision to ban unmarried women for the streets of Uganda was met with surprise.
The Ugandan despot started by banning women from wearing miniskirts, wigs and trousers because he believed the practice was promoting moral decay in the country. He later lifted the ban on trousers after he found out women in other Muslim countries wore them.
He also banned perfume, creams and deodorants.
He then banned unmarried women from the streets because he believed they were prostitutes. The pronouncement encouraged his military to force single women to get married.
