A$AP Rocky and Rihanna were close and longtime friends before they started dating in 2020. Prior to taking his relationship with Rihanna, 37, a step further, the rapper and actor recently disclosed that his mother actually convinced him to date her, Page Six reported.

“My mother used to say sh*t like, ‘I know you like this girl that you [are] with right now’ — I ain’t gon’ say no names — ‘but I want you with RiRi,’” Rocky, 37, said on Thursday’s episode of The New York Times’ “Popcast.”

“It’s like, ‘Ma, why you keep saying that? That girl don’t even want me like that,’” the Don’t Be Dumb rapper added. “Mothers know best,” he continued.

“I’m thankful that [Rihanna] was put in my life at that time because any time prior to that I don’t think I was ready for something like that. I don’t think she was either.”

Fast forward, Rocky and Rihanna are still going strong, and they currently share two sons and a daughter. Rocky also said in the interview that Rihanna “was always my boo,” and he “always f—ed with her.”

“We were on the same page. Born the same year. My dad is from her country … When I go back, I get to see both sides of my family. It’s so many similarities, it’s just funny. We laugh about it a lot,” Rocky said about the things they share in common.

In a previous interview with Perfect Magazine, Rocky touched on how he juggles career and fatherhood, emphasizing that he gains happiness from performing his duties as a “father and a partner and a loving husband.”

The 37-year-old spoke about his family when he was asked about the moments when he “experiences the greatest satisfaction and happiness.”

“I think peace really makes me happy,” the Praise the Lord (Da Shine) rapper added.

“Being a father and a partner and a loving husband in my family is what makes me really, really happy. I hope this doesn’t sound cliché, and I would hate if it does, because that’s what honestly does get me going: being able to express myself creatively, being able to be a family man and being able to be an artisan. It doesn’t matter what hat I wear that day, it’s just about being able to give it my all and do these things.”
