MV Spice Islander

In 2011, this vessel sank off the coast of Zanzibar from Ugunja. It had on board 2000 people, 1500 of who died according to a 2012 report by the Tanzanian government.

It is said the ship capsized after an engine failure.

Eight months later, and after the Zanzibar government had said it would arrest anyone involved in managing the MV Spice Islander, another ferry, MV Skagit, sank. The ship had on board 290 passengers instead of the required 200. At least 150 people were reported missing in the accident.
