Nigeria (Monthly Salary: $15,800)
Nigeria may be one of Africa’s largest economies, thanks to its sheer size and abundant oil reserves. The country boasts an impressive GDP of $568 billion.
Nevertheless, the vast majority of Nigeria’s 180 million people live below the poverty line with an average monthly wage of less than $80.
Despite the prevalent poverty, each Nigerian lawmaker earns an average monthly salary of about $15,800. The salaries of the 360 members of parliament and 109 senators cost Nigerian taxpayers $7.5 every month or $90 million every year.
Each legislator also earns a raft of non-taxable allowances in excess of $60,000.
