Sally Hayfron and Robert Mugabe
Sally Hayfron came from a middle-class family on the Ghanaian coast. Robert Mugabe was an itinerant middle-school teacher who had gone to Ghana in 1958.
Mugabe was a self-described student of Kwame Nkrumah’s vision of Africa. As such, the pressures of appealing to ethnic sensibilities in choosing a wife never quite got to him.
Marrying Hayfron may be seen as Mugabe’s ability to see through the dreams of Nkrumah.
