As we usher in a new month, especially one in celebration of Women’s History Month, it is important to note the contribution of Black women to literature.

Scientists have often noted the importance of storytelling to our ability to make sense of and draw meaning to our lives. It is imperative, then, that Black women’s contribution in this area must be highlighted and celebrated this month.

The 5 books listed below are some longstanding works in the literary canon. With authors from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas, these books have been noted by literary critics and readers for their outstanding contribution to our knowledge and understanding of Black women’s lives.
